Artists and Scientists against Climate Change

It is good to read these words:

"Artists and scientists are natural collaborators, both are explorers and
storytellers, seeking out new ways of understanding, communicating (and
indeed, changing) the world around them. So when it comes to the dry
(or simply terrifying) language of climate science, the marriage of the
two can be particularly fruitful. Artists can respond to environmental
data in work that provokes real engagement. By communicating these
issues in lateral, innovative ways, by using humour and humanity, these
sorts of works can reach us on a more animal, cellular, level – and
therefore, hopefully, demand our response."

It is good to read these words for two reasons. We, at JPT, believe that art and science MUST work together to reach out to the general public and explain very fundamental scientific issues in ways that we all can understand. But also because Climate Change (CC) is probably the biggest problem facing us (there are many others… and they are pretty much inter-related).

The initiative at the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) in Manchester is very important. We are also very much engaged in the issue: Pale Blue Dot, our latest production, is alla bout CC and taking care of our Mother Earth. After all, in complete agreement with what Carl Sagan used to say, it is our spaceship, the only one we have.

On the way to IETM in Valencia!

We are very happyto announce that we will be in Valencia (Spain) at the next IETM Plenary Meeting, starting November 3rd and ending on the 6th 2016.
It will be very interesting and exciting. Even more for us because we will be presenting the Jet Propulsion Theatre project during the Cross-Overs session organized for Saturday Nov 5th at 10.00 am.

We will be connecting with other organizations that work at the interface between art and science and that mix disciplines. We will be sharing the round table with the spanish Conexiones Improbables and Analogue from the U.K. There will also be other organizations and professionals to share ideas and raise interesting questions.

Jet Propulsion Theatre performs at KU Leuven University in Belgium

From 18 - 20 October 2016, Jet Propulsion Theatre was at KU Leuven in Belgium, to perform The Principle of Uncertainty (unplugged version) in front of the Faculty of Science and PhD students, and to run a 3-day workshop on Storytelling Techniques and Theatre Training Methods for Teachers and Popularisers. 18 PhD students of the Faculty of Science were selected to participate in this workshop, which enabled them to acquire important skills to better speak about their reseach.
The JPT team also met with many members of the Faculty of Science to get insight into our next project, and to explore opportunities for collaboration.

Tecniche di narrazione e metodi di formazione teatrale per insegnanti di scienze e divulgatori

PANORAMICA GENERALE
Molto spesso abbiamo la necessità di parlare in pubblico: per presentare un progetto di ricerca, per chiedere una sovvenzione, durante l’insegnamento oppure anche solo per affascinare ed arricchire la vita di qualcuno!... ma altrettanto spesso ci sentiamo a disagio di fronte alla sfida. Mi sento tranquillo di essere lì, davanti a un pubblico? Cosa sto facendo? Sono consapevole di ciò che il mio corpo sta comunicando? E la mia voce? Devo sottolineare alcune parole? Quali? Dovrei guardare il pubblico negli occhi? Come faccio a sapere quando ho l'attenzione del pubblico? E più in generale: come posso diventare un oratore migliore? Questo workshop si propone di sviluppare le competenze per diventare migliori comunicatori.

TARGET
Professori universitari, insegnanti nel campo dell'istruzione superiore, ricercatori, insegnanti di scienze, scrittori scientifici, studenti e divulgatori scientifici.

SCHEMA DEL LABORATORIO
Utilizzando i metodi della formazione teatrale adattati alle nostre esigenze e le tecniche di narrazione, ci “apriamo al pubblico” per diventare comunicatori più efficaci. Nel processo sviluppiamo esercizi pratici per trovare il proprio centro; aumentare la propria consapevolezza (cosa faccio, cosa fanno gli altri); acquisire un sano senso di fiducia nel rapporto con gli altri; sviluppare la capacità di ascolto, di improvvisazione, di gestione del tempo e del ritmo; migliorare le nostre capacità di leadership e di coraggio. Inoltre, durante il workshop un po’ di tempo è dedicato alle tecniche per una corretta respirazione corretta e la gestione della voce.

PARTECIPANTI E ORARI
Il numero dei partecipanti e la durata del workshop saranno decisi con gli organizzatori, in base alla disponibilità e ai vincoli. Come regola generale, il laboratorio è aperto a non più di 18 persone alla volta per la durata di almeno 10 ore. Naturalmente, la disponibilità di più tempo a disposizione per il workshop è sempre benvenuta!

Entrambi i laboratori sono condotti da Andrea Brunello. Altri professionisti potrebbero essere coinvolti a seconda delle specifiche esigenze.

La drammaturgia applicata alla scienza: come creare una storia intrigante partendo da un'idea scientifica

PANORAMICA GENERALE
Questo workshop fornisce strumenti pratici ed esperienziali per tradurre un'idea scientifica in una storia adatta per il racconto e la divulgazione. Il workshop si concentra sulle tecniche di scrittura creativa e comprende esercizi pratici.

TARGET
Professori universitari, insegnanti nel campo dell'istruzione superiore, ricercatori, insegnanti di scienze, scrittori scientifici, studenti e divulgatori scientifici.

SCHEMA DEL LABORATORIO
Gli elementi fondamentali della drammaturgia e della narrazione sono presentati. Ai partecipanti viene chiesto di proporre una serie di argomenti scientifici da sviluppare durante il workshop. Questi argomenti sono analizzati e le idee più interessanti sono scelte per il lavoro diventando la base dei racconti e delle opere teatrali elaborate durante il laboratorio. Si procede quindi con la scrittura. I risultati vengono poi letti ed analizzati con attenzione sia in maniera individuale che in gruppo sotto la guida del conduttore. I risultati finali più meritevoli possono trovare una semplice messa in scena o una lettura scenica.

Il numero dei partecipanti e la durata del workshop saranno decisi in accordo con gli organizzatori, in base alla disponibilità e ai vincoli. In ogni caso, si dovrà prestare attenzione e cura per assicurare che ci sia abbastanza tempo da dedicare allo sviluppo delle esigenze individuali. I partecipanti potrebbero essere invitati a scrivere ed elaborare i loro testi anche al di fuori degli orari del workshop.
