JPT at Warwick University (U.K.)

From the 18th to the 27th of January 2016, JPT founder Dr Andrea Brunello will be at the University of Warwick as an IAS Visiting Fellow. In the context of his visit, he will engage with scholars and students at Warwick in a series of events and workshops that aim to facilitate the interdisciplinary dialogue between science and the humanities in an innovative, creative way, and to increase impact-capacity building across the University.

PALE BLUE DOT PREMIERES AT FACTS FESTIVAL

Our new production, Pale Blue Dot, will premiere on November 24th 2015 in Bordeaux (France) at a Festival produced by the University of Bordeaux:

Andrea Brunello

Andrea Brunello holds a bachelor degree in physics and mathematics earned at Cornell University (USA, 1992) and a Physics Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (USA, 1997).

Brunello was a physics postdoc at Utah State University in 1998/1999 and at the University of Trento (Italy) in 1999/2001.

Brunello is currently affiliated with the Physics Department of the University of Trento (Italy) where he has just finished teaching a course called Emozionare con la Scienza, on scientific storytelling and scientific playwriting.

In January 2016 Andrea was a IAS Visiting Fellow at the University of Warwick (U.K.).

Andrea Brunello has published articles in some of the most prestigious physics journals, most notably Physical Review Letters and Physical Review A.

In 2001 Brunello decided to follow his artistic side pursuing a full time professional theatre career. As a matter of fact his love affair with theatre had started much earlier than 2001. Andrea begun his theatre education at a very young age with the Teatro Instabile di Pordenone (Italy) in 1986 and 1987. Then he attended acting and playwriting classes in several USA Universities: Cornell University – 1990/1992; State University of New York at Stony Brook – 1992/1994, where he studied with the playwright Professor Jonathan Levy; and Utah State University – 1994/1998.

In 2010 he graduated from the three year program “SAT - SCHOOL AFTER THEATRE advanced training program” led by the Russian director and pedagogue Jurij Alschitz. SAT is affiliated with the EATC/Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) of Moscow (Russia).

Brunello is founder and artistic director of Teatro Portland (Trento, Italy – www.teatroportland.it). He is also artistic director of Arditodesìo Company, a professional theatre company founded in 2002 (www.arditodesio.org). With Arditodesìo Brunello has written and produced more than 10 original plays that have toured all over Italy and abroad. The works deal mostly with social issues and make use of spoken word and storytelling techniques.

Recently Brunello has founded the Jet Propulsion Theatre (JPT), a permanent laboratory for the theatrical creation connected to science, the people of science and the scientific tale. JPT aims at bringing out the human side of science through theatre (www.jetpropulsiontheatre.org). JPT is a research lab which aims to narrate science by mixing it with theatre. JPT is a joint collaboration with the Physical Science Communication Laboratory of the physics Department of the University of Trento.

In December 2016 Brunello was awarded the bronze medal in the category “Cultivating Curiosity” at the Reimagine Education Conference organised by the University of Pennsylvania for the Augmented Lectures project. Reimagine Education has been called “one of the foremost congregations for innovative education pedagogies in the world”.

In 2017 Brunello was the creator and artistic director of Teatro della Meraviglia, a festival centred on the narration of science through theatre (www.teatrodellameraviglia.it) organised with the Physics Department of the University of Trento (Italy).

PLAYWRITING APPLIED TO SCIENCE:
HOW TO CREATE A GRIPPING STORY STARTING FROM A SCIENTIFIC IDEA

Topic OverviewThis workshop provides practical tools and experience for translating a scientific idea into a story apt for science storytelling and popularization. The workshop focusses on creative writing techniques and it includes practice exercises.

TargetUniversity professors, teachers in higher education, researchers, science teachers, science writers, students and science popularizers.

Schematic overviewThe basic elements of playwriting and storytelling are presented. The participants propose a number of science topics that they would like to develop during the workshop. These topics are analyzed and the most interesting ones are chosen for the work and they become the basis of the stories and plays. An in depth writing, reading of the material and subsequent analysis is performed where the participants are required to write and discuss their work as well as that of others under the guidance of the conductor. The final results can eventually be staged.

Participants and TimeThe number of participants and the duration of the workshop will be decided depending on availability and constraints. In any case care should be taken to ensure that there is enough time to devote to the development of individual needs. The participants may be asked to produce work outside of the workshop periods.

STORYTELLING TECHNIQUES AND THEATRE TRAINING METHODS
FOR SCIENCE TEACHERS AND POPULARIZERS

Topic OverviewVery often there arises the need for speaking in public: to present a research project, to ask for a grant, when giving a lesson… but just as often we may feel uneasy about the challenge. Do I feel comfortable being there in front of an audience? What am I doing? Am I aware of what my body is communicating? What about my voice? Should I emphasize certain words? Which ones? Should I look at the audience in the eyes? How do I know when I have the audience’s attention? And more generally: how do I become a better speaker? This workshop aims at developing skills for becoming better communicators.

TargetUniversity professors, researchers, science teachers, science writers, students and science popularizers.

Schematic overviewBy using aptly modified theatre training and storytelling techniques we open up to the audience and become better public speakers. In the process we develop practical exercises to: finding one’s center; increase one’s own awareness (what I do, what others do); gaining a healthy sense of confidence in the relationship with the others; developing listening skills; improvisation; tempo/rhythm; leadership and courage. Moreover, during the workshop some time is devoted to proper breathing techniques and voice management.

Participants and TimeTimes and frequency can be arranged depending on specific needs! As a general guideline, the workshop is open to no more than 18 people at a time for the duration of at least 10 hours. Of course, the availability of more time for the workshop is always welcome!

The workshop is conducted by Andrea Brunello. Other professionals could be involved depending on specific needs.

The Principle of Uncertainty reviews

The Principle of Uncertainty is JPT's first production. Its first drafts were publicly read in november 2012 and the production premiered in april 2013. Since then it has been performed hundreds of times all over Europe and abroad.

It has been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013 and then again in 2017.
